・…することを建て前とする claim in theory that…; publicly say that…; make it one's professed principle to do….
●そういう建て前で動くことになっています. That's the principle we're supposed to work on [official rule].
・建て前ではそうだが実際は例外もある. That's how it is supposed to be [in theory, in principle], but actually there are exceptions. | You're right in theory, but it's not always that way.
・建て前ではそうかもしれないけど, 本音は別のところにあるんじゃないの? That may be what you say [your position, your stance], but don't you really believe something different?
●その問題についてはそういう建て前になっています. That is the official position [the position we take publicly] on the problem. | That is our official stance on the matter.
・君の言ってることは建て前にすぎない. You're only saying that for appearances' sake. | You are simply mouthing the official line.
●その建て前を崩すわけにはまいりません. We must stick to that principle [position]. | We can't make exceptions.
・成績は公開しないというのが建て前だ. In theory the results are not supposed to be made public. | The theory [official position] is that the results don't get made public.
